To what extent are we expected to teach the "idealistic America"? and how does one balance this with a lot of revisionist history which has a very critical view of America?
Academic freedom is based on the position of the individual. In the Cold War era the times were different. Outright promotion of a communist ideology in the Cold War was career suicide. I think the book didn't do a good enough job of describing the times in which the situation existed instead of focusing on communist teachers faced discipline or termination.
Good question. The balance comes from personally evaluating the validity of revisionist history and determining how it fits with curriculum demands.
ReplyDeleteThe fact that you can discuss revisionist history must mean we are more free.
