Would you feel comfortable teaching in an "urban " school or racially diverse district? Why do urban schools constantly score lower than suburban schools?
I've taught most of my career in diverse districts--at least more diverse than Carroll. Quality of education is the determining factor in test scores. It's certainly true now.
I wouldn't feel as comfortable as I do in this type of district. A lot of things play into the urban schools constantly scoring lower. Poverty, opportunities good or bad to do other things instead, stereotypes and trying to overcome the stereotypes do not help the situation.
I would not. Maybe when I started in education, I would be desperate enough but there would definitely be an uneasiness if I taught at a minority school.
I enjoyed the urban experience. Many of them tried harder than the kids I taught in suburban schools. It requires a different skill set, that is for sure. Suburban kids often had an entitled mindset. Urban students were more appreciative--in my experience.
