The book tracks a history of this phenomena. Teacher's constantly run the risk of getting in trouble. Its not just exclusive to those who push students or are unpopular.
This is quite relevant as we are "on display" all day long in front of an audience that may or may not want to find a way to get us in to trouble. Anything we say, or do can be scrutinized and taken out of context. Often it is the teachers that push the envelope that run this risk.
No doubt this is true. Teachers that don't have students fail their classes, have discipline issues, etc never have to deal with controversial situations. Not saying I push the limits, but I remember when I came here 15 years ago, there were quite a few parents who tested me about grades, policy, issues, etc. Now that I've been here and my reputation is a known commodity, the number of issues I've dealt with in the last 10 years is minimal.
I feel you could be questioned more. Young/beginning teachers get tested or questioned more. I feel it comes down to good administrators backing the teachers that they know are doing their job to the best of their abilities. A teacher does a better job knowing they have good backing and are not being watched or second guessed constantly.
