Sports were used/seen as a way to reduce dropouts in the book and beginning of schools. Are sports still helping in this area or have they become less important to our youth and less of an aide to preventing dropouts?

  1. It depends on the district. Now that sports are part of the scholastic culture it seems unlikely that reducing dropout rates is a consideration in today's world. That being said, sports benefit the school culture.

  2. ISHAA still claims it is really important. Is it?

  3. Sports and activities do increase graduation rates and grade point average. Schools do spend a huge amount on activities and sports I am not sure if the total cost balances out with the benefits but in our culture a schools activities are the face of the community as compared to European schools where this is not the case

  4. I agree. I think I heard/read somewhere, from a reliable source, that students that are also athletes on average get better grades and have better attendance. This was in the last five years that I read or heard it. I can't remember the source however.

  5. Sports definitely played a larger role previously than they do now. I remember the football coach at a previous school using the logic "better than with me than out on the streets" to keep kids eligible. I think that is an outdated logic for the most part. Doc Austin is right on with his post.
