I my aunt started teaching in the 1950's in a one room school house. She taught for 40 years. She was a devoted, strong union advocate . This books helped me understand why she felt so strongly about unions.
Unions were created as a response to issues in terms of professionalization of the industry. Collective action provided an opportunity for larger issue discussion in an organized manner. At the time the unionization of teachers assisted educators gaining power both in the classroom and in society.
Unions help so individual teachers don't have to negotiate on their own from year to year. I feel unions do a great deal for the teachers. I just wish it was local only with the backing of the larger state/national union. Keep all funding local and be able to set certain rules that may be needed at a local district, but not at all districts.
